Some paintings arrive with a signature. Winter Serenity arrived with a paper trail.
This signed original by Tinyan Chan came to Design Consignment Gallery with records of its acquisition from The Whistler Village Art Gallery in British Columbia in 1996.
The gallery’s Certificate of Authenticity identifies the work as Winter Serenity, specifies acrylic on canvas and records a purchase date of February 10, 1996. Original purchase paperwork survives alongside a letter dated March 11, 1996, describing the enclosed certificate and a photograph taken with Tinyan during a gallery opening.
In that photograph, the present consignor stands beside the artist, with the painting visible behind them. It gives the acquisition record a personal dimension: a moment at the gallery preserved alongside the work itself.
The canvas carries another part of the story. On the reverse are a personal dedication, a signature and a date appearing to read February 10, 1996, matching the documented purchase date. The title and a 30 × 40-inch size notation are also handwritten on the back.
Pale birch trunks cross dark water, while snow and cool blue distance give way to passages of violet, turquoise, gold and orange. Visible brushwork brings texture and movement to the winter scene.
The canvas measures 40 inches wide by 30 inches high. Its substantial gilt-finish frame and pale fabric liner bring the overall dimensions to 48.75 inches wide by 39 inches high.
