Description
George Nelson / Vitra / 2008
Some chairs furnish a room.
The Coconut Chair defines one.
George Nelson designed the Coconut Chair in 1955 around a remarkably simple idea: a broad, sculptural seat shaped like a section of coconut, with a light exterior and dark interior. The result still feels fresh today. Its three raised corners create an unmistakable silhouette, while the low, open seat gives the chair a relaxed presence that invites use rather than demanding admiration from a distance.
This example was manufactured by Vitra in Germany and retains its original underside production label marked 05.2008. The black leather upholstery creates the chair’s defining contrast against the white molded shell, while the slender chrome-finished steel base keeps the composition visually light.
Exceptional pre-owned condition, allowing the clarity of Nelson’s original design to remain the focus.
The black leather remains clean, supple, and beautifully preserved, with only minimal evidence of careful use. The white shell and chrome-finished base also present exceptionally well, making this a particularly satisfying example to encounter in person.
In the United States, collectors may also recognize the Coconut Chair through its association with Herman Miller. This particular chair is the clearly labeled Vitra production, preserving the original George Nelson design with documented manufacturer attribution.
The advantage of seeing it here
No distant photographs. No long-distance freight gamble. No wondering whether the chair will live up to the listing.
You can inspect the shell, view the production label, sit in the exact chair, and know precisely what you are bringing home.
It is currently on view at Design Consignment Gallery in San Diego during a limited consignment window. A design this recognizable can anchor an entire room, and this one is available now without the usual distance, delay, or guesswork.
See it in person while it is still on the floor.
